First Indian elected to head Claretians worldwide

ROME: Fr Mathew Vattamattam (pic) of India has been elected the 13th Superior General of the Claretian congregation, making him the first Indian in the post. The election held on Sept 12 during the general chapter of the congregation also elected another Asian -Fr Leo Dalmao, currently Provincial Superior of Philippines — as consultor and Prefect of Formation. Fr Leo takes the same office served for 12 years by Fr Vattamattam.
Fr Vattamattam, born in Kerala in 1959, had his basic education in the southern state, where he also joined the congregation in 1974.
The Indian priest holds a Licentiate in Systematic Theology and Psychology from the Gregorian University and has been Novice Master of the Province of Bangalore from 1996-2003.
In 2003 he was elected as General consultor and Prefect of Formation and re-elected in 2009 for the same office.
The election coincided with their 25th General Chapter, bringing together representatives of more than 3,000 Claretians in 65 countries.
Other elected officials include: Fr Henry Omonisaye of West Nigera as consultor without prefecture; Fr Manuel Tamargo of Spain as consultor and General Economer; and Provincial Superior of Portugal Province, Fr Artur Teixeira as Consultor-Prefect of Apostolate; Fr Gonzalo Fernandez was also re-elected Consultor- Prefect of Spirituality while Bro. Carlos Verga of the Province of San Jose del Sur was named Consultor-Prefect of Youth-vocation ministry. -- ucanewsindia.in
