On Saturday, April 1, St Thomas More Church in Subang Jaya held its first Lenten Campaign Day, organised by the Catechetical Ministry. With the Lenten 2017 theme of Following the way of Christ, activities on the day included an art competition for primary children, a poster competition for the secondary level, a biblical themed treasure hunt and grocery collection for the urban poor.

A newspaper collection and coffee morning was also held with all proceeds from the sales going towards the urban poor under the care of the PIHDM Ministry at STM.

In addition, talks by representatives of PIHDM and AOHD were also organised for the benefit of the parents, to help them better understand the roles of these ministries. The response to the activities was indeed encouraging as excited children gathered in the morning to register for the events.

While the art competition was underway, Fr Raymond Pereira, Parish Priest of STM distributed bags of sweets to all the children much to their delight. There was eager anticipation before the treasure hunt, which was organised by the very able youth and junior catechists. Even the sudden onset of a downpour did not dampen the spirits of the children as everyone raced to complete the hunt. Truly amazing talent was displayed at both the art and poster competitions which depicted Lenten themes, and the judges had a tough time picking out the winning entries.

The day culminated in a prize giving ceremony for the winners of the poster and art competitions as well as the treasure hunt. A fun day was had by all. Overall, the objective of the day, which was to bring Christ to the children by “Following the way of Christ,” was achieved by the awareness of the needs of others, as well as through a strong sense of community spirit.
