Organized by various trade unions, the strike will disrupt regional and long-distance rail services operated by Trenitalia, Italo, and Trenord, including connections to and from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport.

Pilgrims returning home after Sunday’s final mass could face challenges, especially those staying outside Rome to save on accommodation costs.

Many rely on trains for transport into the city or to the airport, with train fares priced at around €8 compared to taxi fares exceeding €50.

Unlike weekday strikes, the timing of this weekend action means there will be no guaranteed services during peak hours.

Union representatives have attributed the strike to demands for improved contracts and better working conditions for employees in the railway maintenance sector, according to local media

The strike takes place amid ongoing issues within Italy’s rail system, including delays and disruptions. Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has described recent incidents of suspected “sabotage” on railway lines in Padua and Rome as “disconcerting.”

The state-run rail operator Ferrovie dello Stato has filed a police report citing a series of “highly suspicious” disruptions that have caused significant service interruptions.

Salvini has pledged to address these incidents and work toward improving the country’s rail infrastructure.

The planned industrial action has prompted concerns among pilgrims and regular travelers, with many seeking alternative transport options to navigate the anticipated disruptions.--licas.news
