SETAPAK: Good Shepherd Church held its first full day formation for BECs on Leadership skills and succession planning. This was conducted by Msgr Mitchel Anthony and Rita Krishnan from the Archdiocesan BEC Animating Team (ABECAT).

This session was specially designed to address the second Area of Concern of the BEC Cluster, namely lack of vibrancy due to poor leadership and lack of interest. The aim of the formation was to equip our BEC Coordinators with appropriate people skills to build communities and serve the Lord by focusing on getting our BECs to be more vibrant, caring and sharing and walking in the footsteps of Christ. Keeping Jesus as our role model, we become stewards that can carry out his work of building faith and helping communities in the most Christ- like manner, thus practicing what we preach with love, courage and zeal.

Forty-two participants of varying ages, from seniors to youths of the parish attended. The session touched on delegation and preparing future leaders to journey with respect, responsibility, commitment. Humility, good listening and communication skills are basic tools for the success of BECs — to walk the talk and build future leaders for the growing parish and communities.

Msgr Mitchel shared several enlightening stories, which touched many. He stressed that the role of a good leader is important to the church because he/she is a professional in accomplishing things. His/her personality would be inspiring and attractive, coming about through refinement, prayer life, joining prayer groups and always being there. As a leader he/ she must know and build a relationship with Jesus.

Parish priest Fr Christopher Soosaipillai asked the participants to reflect and share the lessons learnt with all the other BEC coordinators and members. He urged the coordinators to stick to God’s mission in building His people while believing in themselves in order to encourage greater engagement with their respective communities
