KAJANG (Herald Malaysia): A Charity Dinner & Dance was held on Sept 16 to celebrate Keluarga Kami’s (RKK) 25th Anniversary at the church hall of the Church of the Holy Family. The charity dinner was well attended, with nine hundred patrons. YB Puan Dr Daroyah Binti Alwi, Selangor EXCO Member in charge of Welfare, Health & Women’s Affairs, was also present.

Fr Surain Durai Raj, in his welcome address said, “You see, dear friends, in a time when people believe that passion, energy and determination are sufficient to accomplish what is desired, members of SSVP have shown that, while all of these are vital for the forming of the Home, the balance that their work needs is prayer, supported by their Vincentian Spirituality.” He added, “It is from this spirituality that vision, zeal, trust and surrender flow. Keep this balance of prayer and reflection constant. It is a reminder that grace perfects nature.”

Following the speeches, the celebration was officially launched, together with the cutting of the anniversary cake. A video montage tracing the beginnings of RKK accompanied the theme song Orphans of God. “I am indeed thankful to all our benefactors and donors who so graciously and generously donated, in both cash and kind,” said Organising Chairman, Bryan Perera.

Long service awards were also presented to two employees of RKK, Caroline Pillai and John Soma Naidu.

RKK, a project of SSVP, Conference of the Holy Family, commenced operations on June 1, 1990 in a two storey residential property, as a shelter for the underprivileged, the abandoned, the abused and marginalized children. As more and more children were admitted, SSVP acquired a single storey bungalow and later, rented an adjacent single storey corner property to accommodate the boys.

As referrals continued to increase from the local Welfare Department and NGOs, SSVP acquired a plot of land behind the present bungalow for RM300,000.00. A three storey building was erected at a cost of RM1,053M. The construction cost and all its internal fixtures and fittings were funded by the generosity of Malaysians, the State Government of Selangor, the Malaysian and Japanese Governments, Vincentians from Malaysia and Singapore, Corporate Malaysia, Parishioners of the Church of the Holy Family and Friends of SSVP.
