December is always a busy month for the Church of St Francis of Assisi (SFA). The Parish Evangelising Team, PET, was given the task once again to coordinate SFA’s Hospital Mission for the seventh consecutive year under the guidance of Parish Priest, Fr Andrew Manickam OFM Cap.

This year, on top of the Paediatric Wards in six Government Hospitals, 30 parishioners, together with the PET members, had the opportunity to visit a new Mission Centre. It was the Children’s Home of Hope (CHH) under the National Cancer Society of Malaysia.

In CHH, there are only 14 children, aged between 3 to 16 years. Though the numbers were small, it was a Mission with a difference. It gave the group the opportunity to interact closely with the children. Together with their parents and siblings who were  there to show their support, these children were soon swaying to the Christmas carols that were joyfully sung.

Despite their condition, the children, encouraged by the Santas and volunteers, eagerly participated in the games. The laughter from the children rang like music. Tired but happy, everyone then settled down to a simple lunch where ice-cream and jelly were part of the menu.

After lunch, there was a special dedication for the children. Bearing placards which said “YOU ARE STRONG”, “YOU ARE A FIGHTER”, “WE BELIEVE” all the volunteers gathered before the children and their families and sang the Fight Song. It was beautiful seeing everyone, including the children and their families, with “I AM STRONG” and “I AM A FIGHTER” placards singing along and raising their fists. It  was a touching moment indeed. A few of the mothers were moved to tears during this dedication. Before goodbyes were said, the Santas finished their Mission by giving out Christmas gifts which the children received with  so much love and joy as seen from the smiles on their faces. It was indeed a meaningful and fulfilling Mission for everyone. A Mission which will be remembered and cherished. SFA CARES!
