SANDAKAN: St Mary’s celebrated its 136th anniversary on August 18.

Bishop Julius Dusin Gitom thanked and congratulated the parishioners on their feastday as well as their preparation for the celebration with rosary and novena as a means to bring the parishioners together.

He said these spiritual activities would help in strengthening the faithful to face future challenges.

He ended his speech by challenging the parishioners to serve the needs of all the different groups in the parish.

Parish priest Fr David Garaman took the opportunity to thank the ministries in the parish including those serving at the Church of St Mark and the Church of St Peter. They are the ones who give life to the parish, he said.

He was impressed with these groups who have shown their commitment without taking into account their time, energy and resources. He also thanked those who had contributed financially for the physical development of the parish.

This service and commitment is reflected in the Diocesan Mission ‘Christ centred community, serving one another with Love,’ which has always been emphasised by Bishop Julius.

“I hope that this commitment will encourage others to emulate and actively participate in the life and mission of the Church.”

After the Mass, everyone adjourned to the hall for fellowship and the various performances
