The Lightworks is an outlet for the poor and the marginalised who wish to acquire some skills. It is a project of the Ministry for the Poor of the Catholic Church, under the Penang Office for Human Development (POHD).

The Lightworks offers training in the necessary skills for service in cafes, bakeries, laundries and other contract services including grave maintenance, gardening and church cleaning. Through these trainings, the poor and the marginalised are given an opportunity to be trained with skills to be independent.

In 2016, Penang Skills Development Centre (PSDC) opened its door of opportunity to the young people who come from the urban poor and underprivileged. The PSDC Skills Certificates Course is supported by the POHD and managed by The Lighthouse through The Lightworks Skill Development and Educational Programme.

We have supported two youths through this programme since 2016. We journeyed with them and gave them moral support, with affirmation, encouragement and also some allowance from The Lighthouse. Upon graduation this year 2017, these two youths will be offered immediate employment in the related field or they can choose to further their studies.

The Lightworks Skill Development and Educational Programme is for youths who have completed and passed their SPM examination. The youth will be interviewed by PSDC. Successful candidates will then be enrolled into a six-month Certificate Course with a monthly allowance or scholarship by PSDC.
