PETALING JAYA: In conjunction with the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Kuala Lumpur Archdiocesan Catechetical Commission had a training programme for all the catechists in the archdiocese, focusing on Beatitudes on Film — Reflections and Prayers, at the Church of the Assumption.

The full day training was held on two consecutive Saturdays, February 20 and 27. A total of 147 catechists from 21 parishes attended the programme which was facilitated by Fr Alvin Ho SJ and Bro Gerard Choo SJ.

On the first day, the catechists were trained on how to use films focused on the Beatitudes to catechise students. At the beginning of each film, an explanatory prelude was given to the catechists. After watching the first film, The Chocolate Factory, the catechists were led to reflect and share on the Beatitude Blessed are the poor in Spirit. They were trained on how they could catechise through ‘Reflection and Prayer’, ‘Group Reflection’ and ‘Review.’

Two more films, UP and Bolt were shown and the exercises were repeated to focus on the beatitudes, Blessed are those who mourn and Blessed are the meek. The first day ended with a “conversation to plan for catechising the Beatitudes to students.”

On the second day, they were shown how they could catechise through reflective prayers using scriptures and songs. The catechists were also taught on how to set their sacred space. Then the remaining beatitudes were further explained.

In the afternoon, the catechists were grouped according to their districts, to discuss and brainstorm on various methodologies that could be used to bring the Beatitudes “closer” to the students, either in the classroom, or at weekend camp. The second day closed with a session of sharing of ideas and testimonies.

“This was an excellent two-day training. I realised that a normal training that I would conduct at camps had God in the beginning and the end. This methodology taught me to see God present throughout the entire training,” shared Gerard Victor of Visitation Church.

“I feel special and privileged to have my team and myself present at this training. The methodology on reflective prayers was something new and will make a huge difference in our camps,” said Elizabeth Chong of Visitation Church.

Mary Yong of Sacred Heart Church also echoed the joy and enthusiasm this training had provided for her ministry.

Fr Ho thanked all the catechists who had made the time and effort to be present for the training. He reminded the catechists that catechetical process needs time and, with perseverance and practice, one can master the methodology to catechise to our students well. -- KLACC
