A touch of faith

“I started following my boyfriend (now husband) to Church when we were dating. We went to Church regularly but he never mentioned anything about the faith nor pressured me to convert. "

“Until last year around June 2013, we went to a relative’s house in Melaka for a Buddhist prayer ceremony for his late grandmother. During one of the prayer breaks, a Buddhist monk observed my daughter (she was about 2 years old at that time) and asked a cousin who is this little girl’s mother? I was anxious wondering what my daughter had done to a Buddhist monk for him to take notice of her and ask for her mother. I was relieved when the monk began advising me to guide my daughter in reciting prayers to protect her as she grows. I then told him, I was not practising the Buddhist faith, so I did not know what kind of prayer to teach my daughter. I also told him my daughter is a Catholic, same as my husband. He did not seem suprised. He said he could see lights on the shoulders of my daughter andme. “It could be your husband has been praying to the Holy Spirit to protect both of you.” (At that time I felt so touched; if my husband was praying for us, who was praying for him? I then realised I needed to do something about it). He also said to my husband, “You are not praying sincerely enough and eating too much meat.” He also urged my husband to at least go vegetarian every Friday.

“It was an awakening moment to hear this from a Buddhist monk. From our conversation with him, he seemed to know the faith so well.

“About 10 months in RCIA, I am very happy that I can finallybecome a child of God this coming Easter. This would not have happened had God not touched my daughter and the Buddhist monk.

“God bless.” -- Yuen Ching from Church of the Divine Mercy, Shah Alam
