PETALING JAYA (Herald Malaysia): The Holy Infant Jesus SS20 BEC from St Ignatius Church organized their annual outreach programme for Lent 2014, at their name-sake Holy Infant Jesus Chapel, Kuala Selangor on March 1.

Based on the Lenten theme: Touching the Wounds of Christ, the BEC organized the Chapel’s monthly 1st Saturday children’s activities in a simple, exciting and fun way.

The aim of this month’s activities was to prepare the children for the Lenten season and to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The first activity was a bat and ball game. Colourful balls were written with sin words and were hit with a bat. This signified the strength needed to ‘hit’ sins away during Lent. Some children managed to hit the ball on their first try whilst others had to try several times. The second activity was a treasure hunt. Lenten virtues were written on plastic toy fruits and were hidden around the Chapel grounds. The children ran around excitedly searching for the ‘fruits’ to collect as many virtues as they could.

Finally the Archdiocesan Lenten theme: Touching the Wounds of Christ was transformed into a colourful collage of hand printed motives by the children. This was offered up during the offertory at Mass. After Mass, the children were treated to McDonalds and goody bags.

The adults were elated by the enthusiasm of the children and the dedication of the organisers. For most of the visiting BEC members it was their first time visiting the quaint little Gereja Kanak-Kanak, Kuala Selangor. According to Cynthia Martin, her BEC decided on the Lenten outreach for the children after having recently discovered their namesake Chapel and the 1st Saturday children’s activities. She hopes the seeds sown will yield much spiritual fruitfulness and would touch the lives of the children and all those who were there.

At the end of the day the Parish Priest, Fr Edwin Paul, thanked the Infant Jesus BEC for organising their Lenten outreach to the children of his parish. He reminded the children to continue with their Lenten initiatives through their Sunday school Lenten activities. All said and done, the children had an enjoyable time learning about Lent. “Let the little children come to me and do not stop them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14
