The recent half-day carnival of the Montfort Youth Centre (MYC) raised around RM65,000.
The funds will go towards MYC’s operational expenses. Unlike previous years, funds raised through open house carnivals were utilised towards the building of various in-house facilities and the purchase of state-of-the-art workshop machinery, appliances and equipment for the centre’s training workshop for hands-on application.
With over forty tents around the centre’s main workshop-cum-hall were food stalls, fun and games stalls, and fresh farm produce. Visitors who came from Malacca, Seremban, Muar, Batu Pahat and Tampin helped in making MYC’s amazing carnival a success.
As MYC Director Bro P. Kolandasamy explained, the establishment listed as an Institute of Public Character, depends largely on public donations for its maintenance and growth as well as its day-to-day operational costs and overhead expenses.
Bro Peter also took the opportunity to thank the generosity of many MYC supporters, benefactors as well as well-wishers from both the corporate and private sectors and the general public for their contributions over the years to make what MYC is today following its official opening in 2001.
Bro Peter and other members of the staff were also on hand to explain to the general public regarding admission into MYC. The MYC set up by the Gabrielite Religious Brothers Community is a fully residential centre catering to about 80 students between the ages of 16-19 years from poor and disadvantaged family backgrounds.
Students are enrolled in skills courses like motor mechanics and computer maintenance and repairs, based on the Malaysian Skills Certificate modules which are accredited by the National Vocational Training Council and the Ministry of Human Resources.
“Apart from imparting academic, trade and technical skills to our students, we also teach them to be morally upright, spiritually awakened and socially responsible individuals,” added Bro Peter.
Other well-known establishments are the 55-year-old Montfort Boys’ Town in Shah Alam, Selangor; the Montfort Youth Training Centre in Sabah which opened in 1999, and Ayer Salak’s MYC established a couple of years later.
